 Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Index (CI)

The Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Index (CI) are computed by multiplying the numerical value of grades (A,A,B+,B,B-,C+,C,C-,D+,D,D-,F and WU) by the number of credits of each course. The product of this multiplication yields the number of quality points. The number of quality points is then divided by the total number of accumulated credits to give the Grade Point Average (GPA) or the Cumulative Index (CI).

A GPA is determined for each student at the end of each semester, whereas the CI is an average of the grades for all semesters of study.   For example, the Cumulative Index (CI) of a student who has completed 36 credits of coursework with grades ranging from A to WU is calculated as follows:

Number of Credits   Grade  Quality Points
 6 x A  (4.0)  =  24.0
 3 x   A- (3.7)  = 11.0
 3 x B+ (3.3) =  9.9
 3 x B   (3.0) =  9.0
 3 x C+ (2.3) =  6.9
 9 x C  (2.0)  =  18.0
 3 x D  (1.0)  =  3.0
 3 x F   (0.0)  =  0.0
 3 x WU (0.0)=  0.0
============= =======  ==========
36    81.9

The total number of Quality Points (QP) 81.9, divided by the total number of credits 36, gives a Cumulative Index CI of 2.28. The GPA is computed in exactly the same way but only for the credits and grades earned in one semester.
