Explanation of Grades

A, A-: (Excellent)

The grades of A, A- (Excellent) indicate achievement of high distinction. They require excellence in all areas of work.

B+, B, B-: (Very good)

The grades B+, B, B- (Very good) indicate achievement of high order. They involve excellence in some aspects of the work, such as completeness, accuracy of knowledge, sustained and effective use of knowledge, independent thinking and originality.

C+, C, C-: (Satisfactory)

The grades of C+, C, C- (Satisfactory) indicate acceptable standards for graduation from MIC. They involve, in each course, such work as may be fairly expected of any MIC student of normal ability who devotes to the course a reasonable amount of time, effort and attention. Meeting the required minimum standards, in this case, involves the following: familiarity with the content of the course; familiarity with the methods of study applied in the course; evidence of growth in the actual use of both content and method; full participation in the work of the class; evidence of an open, active and discriminating mind and ability to express oneself well in English.

D+, D, D-: (Fair)

A grade of D+, D, D- (Fair), indicates a level of unsatisfactory work below the expected minimum standards of MIC. It signifies work which, in one or more respects, falls below the minimum standards for graduation but which is of sufficient quality and quantity as to allow the student not to have to retake the course.

F: (Failure)

A grade of F (Failure) indicates an unacceptable standard of work. Work evaluated as ‘F’ is not counted toward the number of credits needed to complete the academic program. The 0.00 credits however, are totaled into the Cumulative Index (CI). If the course is repeated and passed, the passing grade will be recorded on the transcript (not the original ‘F’) and the grade will be calculated into the Cumulative Index (CI).

Grades for Courses not Completed

INC.:   (Incomplete)

An incomplete (INC.) grade may be given to a student for medical reasons or other extenuating circumstances. This grade is given by an instructor when there is reasonable expectation that a student will successfully complete the course requirements within the set deadlines. Prior permission of the Academic Dean is also required. If the INC. grade is not addressed by the sixth week of the following semester, it is automatically converted into the grade of ‘F’.

W: (Withdrawal)

The grade W (Withdrawal) indicates withdrawal from a course without penalty. The grade is assigned by the Office of the Registrar upon approval of an Application for Resignation filed there. Certain deadlines have to be met in order to avoid financial penalties. The grade of W is not computed in the grade point average.

WU: (Withdrew Unofficially)

The grade of WU (Withdrew Unofficially) is assigned by the instructor when a student has never attended class or has ceased attending class and has not submitted an Application for Resignation to the Office of the Registrar. The grade is computed as a failure (F, 0.0) in the Grade Point Average (GPA). Students are therefore advised to submit an official Application for Resignation to the Office of the Registrar.
